RACISM IN REDFERN
Aboriginal Death causes anti-police riot in Sydney
- (from sydney.indymedia.org)

Feb 18th 2004

Another aboriginal death: 17 year old Thomas Hickey (TJ), in the suburb of Redfern in Sydney was found impaled on a fence on Saturday. Was he chased by Police? Almost certainly the police are responsible for generating a climate of fear amoung black youth in the area.

On Sunday, while people were grieving, police chose to escalate their presence and take provocative actions by acting like stormtroopers, caused aboriginal resentment of the NSW police to erupt in rioting in War Zone Redfern on Sunday night in which some 30-50 police have claimed to be injured. The cause of the conflict lies in the over-policing, constant intimidation and institutional racism against aborigines and particularly applied in Redfern over an extended period of time.

Questions arise over the heavy handed policing and intimidation in Redfern rather than a 'community based framework to address the growing feeling of grief and anger in that community'. As an eyewitness Kevin Smith told a reporter from the ABC 7.30 Report program: "I knew it was going to simmer up into something but I didn't think it would go up as heavy as it did. But it was all the young kids that organised themselves against the police because they're fed up with their actions against them."

Sam Watson -- Author -- 'The Kadaitcha Sung'

"Sam Watson was born and raised in Brisbane. In 1970 he turned his back on on a university law degree and joined the burgeoning black political movement.

Throughout that decade Watson marched, fought and organised, and was one of a small band of committed activists who pioneered community-based survival programs in the areas of law, medicine and housing.

In 1982 he moved his family to Caboolture, and over the past few years he has devoted himself to his writing." (1990)

A peace march from Redfern took place on Tuesday 24th.

"Despite hundreds of people attending, media gave it nearly as little coverage as some of the real issues behind the riot the previous week - probably due to the honesty of the speakers and the dignity with which it was conducted ..." (Source - full article)
