Hello Boud,
I wanted to
thank you for this letter. It is actually connected to the root
causes of the problem: there is a carefully orchestrated disinformation
campaign aimed at character assasination of Mick Lambe (easy to
do, given Mick's style), and aimed at maintaining a political climate
which keeps "justifying" the injustices of global and
regional indymedia against Darwin imc. The more I research this
issue, seeing past the passions, and also the way the passions are
being generated, manipulated, channelled, directed, the more I become
convinced of what I wrote in the paragraph above. It is a conscious
and malicious project. It's not possible anymore to sort out the
issue by looking at the "tit for tat" publications of
nastiness, or by trying to assign equal blame as some might try
to do. I have seen that there are some constant parts of this conflict,
which I take to be a more basic ground of its reality. A good indication
of this reality is the remark by Nigel, who wrote "if you can
find *one* example of Mick "attacking" any other activist
on any IMC before the DIM debacle was imposed on them, I'd appreciate
it.": http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/imc-darwin/2006-June/0614-n8.html Also, I have
statements from Justin and from Mick which I trust, both indicating
the the publication of personal or nasty items by Mick and others
in darwin-imc were consciously chosen as a tactic after all other
democratic procedures failed, the tactic was suspended when their
domain was temporarily returned, and resumed again when the domain
was taken away from the group (in violation of indymedia procedures,
and still with no cause, and with no due process for the group).
They say that the publication of disturbing items will stop when
the domain is returned. I believe that
this is their intention and that it is honest. The public record
proves them correct. Also, I have come to see that certain other
individuals and groups who are involved in the Darwin conflict,
who have been maligning Mick and other Darwin-imc members publically
so far have been dishonest, unreliable, impossible to negotiate
with or to reach through logic. I don't even know why we tolerate
them in indymedia. In fact, the
Darwin case has revealed that a number of imc groups "down
under" are in violation of the Principles of Unity and of IndyMedia's
Editorial Policy, and if there were opportunities to audit these
imc groups, they would lose - *should* lose - their imc domains
in a minute. So far, while I see so many violations of basic ethics
(both in the sense of the activist community's ethics and in the
sense of journalist ethics), such as these publications: http://indymedia.org.nz/mod/search/dosearch/index.php?dosearch=1&searchtext=lambe I still see
no reason why Darwin imc should be deprived of its domain. We have
seen threats published from other imc groups and individuals in
the area to "block" Darwin's domain from being returned.
I consider those threats to be unethical, irrelevant to imc procedures
and process, and out of turn. It will come to a fight - a much deeper
fight than any of them suspect - if they try to block Darwin any
longer. And so far,
if I had to choose sides (I'd prefer not to) I'd choose to dissafiliate
*them* and to support Darwin-imc which is still fully affiliated
and not in violation of anything. I hope it will not come to a fight
and that these pseudo-editors, pseudo activist journalist posers
will come to their senses before it's too long. I still see
no reason for Darwin imc to be penalized for having committed no
crime, and to be denied due process. Thanks again,
Petros (new-imc)
